Before the chain, a formal bag was something you held. Chanel hung one from the shoulder — and named it after the month it arrived: 2.55, February 1955.

The chain itself is said to have been borrowed from the keyrings the nuns wore at the convent where Gabrielle Chanel grew up. That is a story the house tells rather than a documented fact, so we pass it on as a story.

What is not in question is the consequence. Both hands free — to hold a glass, a railing, a child, a cigarette. The chain on these bags drops 52 to 54 cm, which is where that idea ends up thirty-five years later.

13 × 17.3 cm at the smallest. 15.2 × 20 cm at the largest. We photograph it beside a phone because centimetres do not mean anything until you see them.

Inside: a phone, a card case, a lipstick. A key. That is the honest list. It is not a bag that lets you carry a spare pair of shoes and a paperback, and that turns out to be the point.

Worn across the body it sits at the hip and stays there. Nothing to shorten, nothing to adjust — the chain was made this length.

Open it and the inside is burgundy — a colour the house has lined its flap bags with since the 2.55.

It is said to be the colour of the uniforms worn at the orphanage at Aubazine, where Gabrielle Chanel was raised. Again: a story the house tells, repeated widely, not something we can document. We like it anyway, and we can at least confirm the colour — you are looking at the actual lining of the bag we are selling.

Stamped into it in gold: CHANEL, and beneath, MADE IN FRANCE. Nobody but you will ever see either.
