The Double Flap

One bag, two flaps. Only one of them shows. Everything that follows is what we found inside.

Each of these bags came to us in Japan, was opened, weighed, measured and graded by hand before it was ever photographed. The serial sticker inside is still attached on these pieces, which is the only reason we can give you a year instead of a guess.

Lift the quilted flap and there is another one underneath — a plain burgundy panel with a CC embossed into the leather, closing over the main compartment. That second flap is the whole reason for the name.

It is not decoration. The outer flap carries the lock and the shape; the inner one closes the bag again, so what is inside stays inside when the first flap is open. In hand it is the difference between a bag that gapes and a bag that does not.

We photograph every piece open, from above, before it is listed — the inner flap, the stitching around the CC, the stud, the turn of the lock. If something is worn, it is in the photograph rather than in a sentence.

The Double Flap was made across several widths, and they do not feel like versions of each other. What is in stock right now runs from 9″ through 10″ to 11″, plus the square. We photograph every one beside a phone, because centimetres do not mean anything until you see them.

The 10″ is the size most people have in mind, and the one we hold the most of. The 9″ is a noticeably smaller bag in the same silhouette. The square is shorter and deeper — a different proportion rather than a smaller one.

On the back there is a flat slip pocket, quilted into the body so it disappears until you reach for it. Most of what is listed here is lambskin; a couple are grained calfskin, which wears harder and creases less.

Chanel hung a bag on a chain so a woman could keep both hands free. Sixty years later that is still the only brief the flap bag answers, and it answers it best after six in the evening.

A dinner that runs long. A lane you walk back down at midnight. A table too small to put anything on, so the chain comes off the shoulder and the bag becomes a clutch. None of that needs explaining to it.

It goes on a linen tablecloth, a stone step, the back of a chair. Every one of these has already done thirty-odd years of exactly that before it reached us — and we photograph what that left behind rather than style it out.

Open both flaps and the inside is burgundy — the colour the house has lined its flap bags with since the 2.55.

It is said to be the colour of the uniforms worn at the orphanage at Aubazine, where Gabrielle Chanel was raised. That is a story the house tells rather than something we can document, so we pass it on as a story. The colour itself we can confirm — you are looking at the actual lining of a bag that came through our hands.

Stamped into it in gold: CHANEL, and beneath it MADE IN FRANCE. Nobody but you will ever see either.
